Huawei’s new tech supports zero-accident work safety system to maintain connectivity during pandemic

Maintaining network and connectivity has become more challenging and highly risky for on-site workers during the pandemic as many telecommunication network equipment are situated at high-risk premises, such as the COVID-19 referral hospitals and their surrounding areas.

As the safety and health of its workers is always becoming its top priority, Huawei Indonesia has taken a swift action when the pandemic hit Indonesia early last year. Huawei has started introducing a new safety and health system since March last year. The AI-assisted system sets the strictest and highest standard procedures, in order to provide the optimum protection to over than 10 thousands Huawei and partnering subcontractor field workers every day. The system is proven to endure the test of time amid the report of zero accident and zero infection over than one year after the new system being executed.

Lai Chaosen, Vice President of Huawei Indonesia, said, “Not only we make thousands of our workers feel safe and well protected while doing their jobs of installing, adding and maintaining the network at high-risk locations; we also ensure network connectivity remain readily available to support accelerated digital transformation in various sectors in the aftermath of the epidemic. The zero-accident report is a solid proof of our “I DO CREATE” commitment to using our frontier technology to enhance work safety system and create value by applying more rigorous workplace safety and health procedures.” Lai Chaosen asserted.

During the pandemic, Huawei, through “the “I DO CREATE” commitment, has also been sharing its expertise in technical matters and providing Cloud and AI-assisted diagnostic solutions for doctors at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto and Pertamedika hospitals. These solutions have proven effective to diagnose COVID-19 six times faster with an accuracy rate of up to 93 percent.

Aside from “I DO CREATEHuawei has other series of “I DO” campaigns that comprise “I DO CARE, I DO CONTRIBUTE, I DO COLLABORATE,” summing up Huawei’s various technology innovations and multiple-helix collaboration initiatives to give back to the community in particular and country in general.

According to Lai Chaosen, the AI-assisted and distance monitoring technology capable system includes a comprehensive map that is created based on risk levels. The higher the risk, the stricter the health protocol and safety requirements. Such system aims at ensure the on-site workers’ compliance towards health protocols, such as by wearing masks, protective clothing and eyewear, helmets, and following other requirements. The map lists telecom equipment located in the premises of the COVID-19 referral hospitals as the red zones, or high-risk ones. There are at least 621 COVID-19 referral hospitals across Indonesia, which are totally covered by Huawei’s map. Outside the red zone, the map rates the yellow zones denoting areas within a 250-meter radius from red zones; and blue marks zones outside of yellow and red.

“Every work carried out, must be authorized by Huawei’s management and our customers’ managements to attain zero accident and zero infection rates,” Lai Chaosen asserted, adding that all zones are being closely monitored for the purpose of deploying, maintaining and securing telecommunications network.

Even before the outbreak, Huawei Indonesia has shown continued commitment to work safety and health as evident in the international and national recognitions and awards it earned. In 2017, Huawei has become the first ICT solution provider in Indonesia to receive the zero-accident award from the Indonesian government. Even, Huawei keeps maintaining its highest work safety standards to claim the zero-accident awards for four consecutive years.

The Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia appreciates Huawei’s strong commitment towards building awareness for management systems that respect compliance to EHS (environment, health, and safety) standards.

Hery Sutanto, S.T., M.M, Director of institutional development for occupational health and safety of the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia,
said,“Huawei’s best practices can be adopted and benchmarked by the ICT industry in order to build stronger, more rigorous health and safety management systems as part of the strategic efforts to effectively mitigate the pandemic.”

A representative of Huawei’s partner operators also shared a similar view with the government on Huawei’s effectiveness in work safety system.

Desmond Cheung, Chief Technology Officer of Hutchison, said,”We appreciate Huawei’s constant contribution amid the difficult COVID-19 situation. Huawei relentlessly manages its expansion projects and operations and maintenance services with uncompromised quality to provide the best mobile communications services for our customers as well as the government’s commitment to serve Indonesians. This is of utmost important for those working or studying from home relying on mobile communications intensively. Under this challenging pandemic, we are grateful to the see that Huawei adheres to the health and safety guidelines giving satisfactory protection to their staff members and subcontractor workers, especially those working on-site and travelling to different parts of the country.”

In addition to the AI-based work health and safety system, Huawei also provides training on work safety procedure in areas with COVID-19 high risk and facilitates workers to abide by the health protocols by wearing complete personal protective equipment (PPE). It also performs health checks on regular basis to the workers.  During the system implementation, it also conducts digital monitoring and review using AI support, while strictly exerts management approval permissions.

Ensuring the well-being of employees and those of partners, is and will always be a key focus for Huawei. Going forward as a world-leading company in the ICT industry, Huawei will continue to provide world-class technology and services, and at the same time, be committed to ensuring the care for employee wellbeing as well as offer a safe and friendly working environment by using advanced technologies.
