Indonesia Calls For Ecosystem Collaboration to Optimize Digital Economy

The Indonesian government encourages the development of the digital economy ecosystem as a whole to realize the potential for better economic value in Indonesia. The Minister of Communications and Information, Johnny G. Plate, stated that the Government facilitated growth acceleration and perfected policies in the digital economy.

"The digital economy is present as an economic space that becomes a meeting point for economic actors, technology drivers, the Government, and the general public to improve living standards through efforts to increase efficiency and productivity, create innovation and encourage inclusiveness," he explained at the Digital Economy Forum I, in Grand Hyatt Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (15/06/2021).

The effort, according to Minister Johnny, was carried out to optimize the potential of Indonesia's digital economy. Based on a study in 2020, Indonesia's digital economy is at least around USD 44 billion, in 2025 Indonesia hopes to be projected to be more than USD 124 billion or equivalent to about 40% of the value of the digital economy in Southeast Asia.

"We all know that Indonesia has the potential to grow rapidly to become the country with the largest internet economy in the region," he said.

The Minister of Communication and Information assessed that currently the showcase of the main industries of Indonesia's digital economy is often filled by industries such as e-Commerce, Financial Technology, Online Media, and Ride-hailing. This condition, according to him, is proof of the growth of the digital economy which is getting wider, wider and bigger.

"In fact, accelerating the growth of various other industries such as Education Technology, Health Technology and Digital Entertainment," he said.

3 Keys

Minister Johnny explained that the key to advancing the digital economy ecosystem, especially in Indonesia, for all stakeholders is the application of work character and main spirit, namely acuity, agility, and courage.

"These three characters are expected to continue to create a digital economy ecosystem with extraordinary ambidexterity in Indonesia," he said.

Therefore, the Minister of Communication and Information invites all stakeholders to adopt the same behavior and spirit. That way, according to Minister Johnny, there will be real options and strategic but practical steps that are anticipatory without waiting for critical or critical situations to surface.

"There is no need to apply the same spirit where we need to ensure the Government has the ability to improve policies and programs based on interactions that are continuously updated by taking into account input and recommendations from fellow Indonesian digital economy industry players," he stressed.

All these things, according to the Minister of Communication and Information, will be accommodated in the Kominfo Digital Economy Forum. "The Kominfo Digital Economy Forum exists as an official communication platform between the Government through the Ministry of Communications and Informatics and digital industry players, which not only aims to provide a forum for discussion and collaboration," he said.

Minister Johnny emphasized that the forum was also targeted to strengthen the spirit of agile work, structured work and guided by the creation of anticipatory measures and options for the development of the digital economy ecosystem.

"So, we need to take advantage of this forum with creative, anticipatory ideas, before they happen, they are anticipated," said Minister Johnny.

The Minister of Communication and Information stated that the forum will be held on an ongoing basis by the Ministry of Communication and Information to be able to reach all stakeholders who are members of the Indonesian digital economy ecosystem, both from players from various industries, layers of society and other government agencies.

According to Minister Johnny, the Digital Economy Forum organized by the Directorate of Digital Economy, Directorate General of Information Applications, Ministry of Communication and Informatics, will be open for any discussion to hear various inputs and recommendations, especially those that are blind spots for the Government, e-Commerce and Ride-hailing industries.

"It is hoped that we can collect and synthesize it together. So, strategic thoughts, practical thoughts in forums like this are necessary so that we together build our digital economy that is better and more anticipatory," he explained.

With the existence of the Digital Economy Forum, the Minister of Communications and Informatics hopes to be able to map out issues related to the digital economy to be further pursued by the Government and followed up at the level of Government policies and strategic programs, especially those coordinated and or organized by Kominfo.

“These inputs are important, so speak openly but don't win alone. We are here to see empirical experiences for a national macro policy in the digital economy sector," he said.
