The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology encourages increased roles and participation and empowerment of women to pursue education and get jobs in the information and communication technology sector. Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Mira Tayyiba said, in order to reduce the gap in roles in the ICT sector, the Women Telecommunication Development Conference will propose a platform that can voice women's aspirations.

"Because currently there are still the majority of men. So, at the ITU session we encourage women to erode the gap (roles in the ICT sector). Not only as a delegation, but also to become a leader, ”he said in a virtual meeting of the Network of Women The Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG) from the Ministry of Communication and Information Office, Jakarta, Friday (28/05/2021).

In fact, as one of the initiatives in Asia and the Pacific, Secretary General Mira stated that the Ministry of Communication and Information wanted to create a platform where women's aspirations could be voiced. This is necessary in order to increase the number of women taking on leadership structures and processes to prepare for the WTDC and other future conferences.

“This can be achieved by building specific platforms and networks for women delegates in each region. Therefore, let's take this opportunity to build on previous progress and create momentum, "said the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Information.

Secretary General Mira said he was happy to be able to participate in the Network of Women Meeting at TDAG 2021 to turn this momentum into action and empower women in the ICT sector.

"As is well known, currently the 2021 WTDC for Asia and the Pacific, has been set at the ITU Asia and Pacific WTDC preparatory meeting on March 9, 2021, with 43% female participation," she said.

According to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Information, WTDC 2021 is a very important development conference for delegates to voice women's aspirations. “It is not only the women we want to serve, but also our female delegates who are working to bring full connectivity to each of their territories,” she explained.

Girls in ICT Day Indonesia 2021

In the TDAG Forum, Secretary General Mira explained several activities that have been carried out by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and have an impact on efforts to increase women's participation in the Asia and Pacific region.

Secretary General Mira Tayyiba said, on April 22, 2021, the Ministry of Communication and Information together with ITU had successfully organized an ICT Day in Indonesia to commemorate 10 Years of Girls in ICT with segmentation of the participation of female speakers.

"In the high-level engagement segment, Girls in ICT Day in Indonesia would not have been possible without the participation and contribution of the United Nations and other regional organizations, private sector companies, civil society organizations, and academia," she explained.

In addition, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Information stated that currently the ITU Asia and Pacific Regional Office was conducting a survey to determine the potential for real activities to be carried out in the coming months, including training and mentoring for women.

“The ITU ASP Regional Office plans to hold the first virtual leadership training for women in Asia and the Pacific which will be held in July this year. In addition, the ITU ASP Regional Office will also conduct mentoring programs with ITU member countries Asia and the Pacific, coaching and training sessions with trainers in various themes such as education, general ICT policies, and teaching practice training," she explained.

The training is part of the Network of Women for WTDC-21 Asia and the Pacific. Secretary General Mira hopes that the ongoing training will improve women's technical and leadership skills.

"Through the training planning and mentoring program, we hope that more women and girls can benefit and gain access to relevant training, workshops and e-learning courses related to technical and leadership skills," she said.

Even in the future, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Information hopes that the training will develop into a platform to overcome challenges and explore possible opportunities for female delegates.

"This will also allow sharing of important experiences in a supportive community through mentoring opportunities and relationship opportunities as an important stepping stone to launching the 2021 World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) globally," she hoped.

Secretary General Mira stated that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology opened the opportunity for each representative of the delegation who attended the meeting today to give a positive response and hoped that all female delegates from Asia and the Pacific could join in the next meeting at GSR-21 and WTDC-21.

In the meeting which was attended by 158 member countries of ITU, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics represented Chair from Asia Pacific. The holding of TDAG-21 aims to encourage women to be active in ITU meetings and build relationships at the global level.
