Indonesia Discusses Collaboration with US Company on Satellite Services

Minister of Communication and Informatics, Johnny G. Plate, discussed the need and potential for providing capacity for satellite technology services in Indonesia with representatives from the US-based Maxar technology company. The Minister of Communication and Information stated that Indonesia needs at least 1 terabyte per second (TBps) for equal distribution of telecommunication services and will increase in the future.

"We also discussed the need for Indonesian satellites for the next 10 years, where we previously said that Indonesia is one of the ASEAN countries that needs a lot of satellite capacity," he explained in a press conference after meeting with representatives of Maxar, in the Media Room. Minister Johnny explained that the meeting discussed many things related to Maxar's experience in providing three satellites for the needs of Indonesian satellites, including the BRI satellite, the Merah Putih satellite and the Nusantara satellite.

"We have just finished with negotiations and are in the process of producing High Throughput Satellite SATRIA-1. After that, there are still many needs for satellites to meet our telecommunication needs, both for electronic government and other communication needs, "he said.

The Minister of Communication and Information stated that Indonesia needs a lot of satellite capacity for backup. Therefore, satellite is not possible without backup. Therefore, Maxar, with its long experience and strong relationships and networks, wants to continue to grow its business and meet the needs of Indonesian satellites.

"Of course we welcome and want to continue to build relationships that we can do to improve bilateral economic relations between Indonesia and the United States, which of course must be interpreted appropriately by business actors, the business world, both businessmen and industry in the United States as well as businessmen and industry is in Indonesia, "he said.

Transfer of Technology and Human Resources

During the meeting, Minister Johnny also discussed the potential use of technology transfer and improving the quality of Indonesian human resources in the satellite sector and in the telecommunications sector. The discussion is also about the potential use of local components and local content or what is known as TKDN.

"We discussed this and we hope that of course we will develop this meeting in more concrete steps to meet Indonesia's needs, as well as build closer economic relations and cooperation between Indonesia and the United States, between Kominfo and technology companies. United States, "he explained.

The Minister of Communication and Informatics emphasized that the cooperation in the field of telecommunication and satellite technology that is taking place with partner countries, including the United States, has the goal of making Indonesia able to increase the internet link ratio and reduce the disparity of internet between regions.
