Minister: Indonesia Will Immediately Enter the 5G Era

Indonesia will soon enter a new era of modern 5G telecommunication technology.  The Minister of Communication and Informatics, Johnny G. Plate, stated that the Ministry of Communication and Information has issued a Certificate of Acceptability for Operation (SKLO) for 5G Services to PT Telkomsel.

"On May 21, 2021 yesterday, the Ministry of Communication and Information through the Directorate General of Post and Information Technology (PPI). The issuance of SKLO for one of the cellular operators marks a significant development (milestone) in the effort to deploy 5G technology in Indonesia," he explained at the Press Conference on the Commencement.  Implementation of the IMT-2020 (International Mobile Telecommunications-2020) Technology-Based 5G Mobile Network on the 2300 MHz Frequency Band in Indonesia from the Media Center of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Jakarta, Monday (24/05/2021).

According to the Minister of Communication and Information, the issuance of SKLO is based on the implementation of the Operational Acceptability Test (ULO) on 19 s.d.  20 May 2021. Based on the results of the ULO, PT Telkomsel was declared “LAIK”.  Minister Johnny explained that in the ULO stage, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology conducted technical testing of PT Telkomsel's facilities and infrastructure for deploying the 5G network.

"The issuance of SKLO marks the success of PT Telkomsel's preparation for deploying a 5G network, which in particular will be carried out on the 2,300 MHz or 2.3 GHz frequency band, with a bandwidth of 30 MHz in the range of 2,300 MHz to 2,330 MHz," he explained.

The ULO stages and the issuance of SKLO are carried out based on the mandate of Article 4 of the Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation Number 5 of 2021 concerning the Operation of Telecommunications, which is a derivative regulation of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation and Government Regulation Number 46 of 2021 concerning Post, Telecommunications and Broadcasting  (Postelsiar).

"Therefore, based on these regulations, the stages of ULO and SKLO ownership are mandatory for any Telecommunication Operator wishing to expand its network due to technological changes that have occurred," said the Minister of Communication and Information.

Minister Johnny stated that 5G technology is included in a new technology change based on the International Mobile Telecommunication-2020 (IMT-2020) specification through the stipulation by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

"Along with the submission of SKLO from the Ministry of Communication and Information today, PT Telkomsel will become the first 5G Network Telecommunication Operator in Indonesia," he said.

This 5G service from Telkomsel will be launched simultaneously on May 27, 2021 and will then be enjoyed on a limited and gradual basis in 6 (six) residential locations in the Jabodetabek area, as well as in other cities such as Solo, Medan, Balikpapan, Denpasar, Batam.  , Surabaya, Makassar and Bandung.

The Minister of Communication and Information hopes that the implementation of 5G technology in Indonesia can further realize more equitable telecommunication access, bridge the digital divide, increase the ability and literacy of the community to use technology more adaptively.
