Telkomsel Officially Becomes the First Cellular Operator to Deploy a 5G Network in Indonesia



Jakarta, 24 May 2021 - Telkomsel has officially received a Certificate of Acceptability for Operation (SKLO) for 5G technology from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) on May 24, 2021. With the receipt of the SKLO, Telkomsel officially becomes "The First 5G Operator in Indonesia", considering  Telkomsel is the first cellular operator declared eligible to operate Indonesia's 5G technology network in accordance with the SKLO issued by the Ministry of Communication and Information on May 21, 2021.

Thus, Telkomsel can immediately set up a commercial 5G network for the initial stage on the 2.3 GHz spectrum frequency and sell 5G products or services to customers.

President Director of Telkomsel Setyanto Hantoro said, “This SKLO is proof that Telkomsel has legally and officially fulfills all applicable requirements and regulations and is the first operator to operate 5G services commercially in Indonesia.

We appreciate the trust that has been given by the Minister and the ranks of the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia, to jointly oversee the implementation of ULO 5G for Telkomsel, and inspire us to carry out the government's strategic plan in developing the latest technology as part of accelerating the distribution of an inclusive broadband and digital ecosystem.  in Indonesia."

Setyanto then added, "The acceptance of SKLO also indicates that Telkomsel is getting closer to realizing a comprehensive digital transformation in Indonesia through the provision and operation of 5G networks and services.

The presence of a leading broadband network in the midst of society is also a form of Telkomsel's commitment to continue to provide customer-centric digital products and services so that they can present solutions and open doors of wider opportunities for all levels of society in order to encourage the nation's digital independence and sovereignty, along with  with the development of the 5G ecosystem which is carried out gradually and is measurable and sustainable by all relevant stakeholders.  "

The Indonesian Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G. Plate, said, "Along with the submission of the SKLO from the Ministry of Communication and Information today, Telkomsel will become the first 5G network telecommunications operator in Indonesia.

This 5G service from Telkomsel will be launched simultaneously on May 27, 2021 and will then be able to be enjoyed on a limited and gradual basis in 6 (six) residential locations in the Jabodetabek area, as well as in other cities such as Solo, Medan, Balikpapan, Denpasar, Batam.  , Surabaya, Makassar and Bandung.  The deployment of the first 5G in Indonesia is also the result of the Ministry of Communication and Information in recent years.

The Ministry of Communication and Information together with several Telecommunication Operators has conducted 12 trials of the 5G network from 2017 to 2020 yesterday.  One of the trials was carried out at the Asian Games in 2018.  Early this year 2021, the Ministry of Communication and Information has also auctioned the 2.3 GHz frequency band. "

Since it was proposed and later declared the winner of the 2.3 GHz frequency auction so as to obtain an additional 20 MHz of allocation by the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia, Telkomsel has moved quickly in accelerating the preparation for 5G implementation in Indonesia.  In order to ensure the security and convenience of customers, Telkomsel strives to prepare the operation of a 5G network in accordance with applicable regulations in Indonesia.

One of them is by running a series of Operation Acceptable Test (ULO) processes as required by the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia in order to prepare for the implementation of 5G technology.  This is in accordance with the provisions contained in Article 4 of the Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information Number 5 of 2021 concerning the Operation of Telecommunications, which is a derivative regulation of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation and Government Regulation Number 46 of 2021 concerning Post, Telecommunications and Broadcasting (  Postelsiar).

The realization of the 5G implementation not only encourages Telkomsel as The First 5G Operator in Indonesia, but can also encourage Indonesia's transformation towards complete digital sovereignty.
