5G Accelerates Indonesia's Digital Transformation

The new Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) ConsumerLab report - which represents 1.3 billion smartphone users worldwide, including 220 million 5G subscribers - shows that 5G-ready smartphone users in Indonesia perceive this fifth-generation technology to be 10 times faster than 4G. With higher speeds, ultra-low latency and wide coverage, 5G is also a transformation driver for businesses and will play an important role in supporting the government's agenda towards digital transformation and industrial 4.0 applications in Indonesia.

The report titled “Five Ways to a Better 5G” also identifies the benefits of 5G to smartphone users around the world. Today, 5G-ready users or users with smartphones with 5G technology in Indonesia, spend more time on AR applications and media than users who have smartphones with 4G technology.

By 2025, consumers in Indonesia are expected to spend 7.5-8 hours per week using augmented reality (AR) applications and cloud gaming. Ericsson's findings show that consumers in Indonesia are willing to pay 50% more for 5G packages equipped with digital services.

Currently, 19% of consumers surveyed already own a smartphone that supports 5G. The report also shows that around 5 million smartphone users in Indonesia will switch to 5G in the first two years after 5G networks become available. By switching to 5G, communication service providers have an advantage that makes them stand out in the local market.

5G exhibition at Telkomsel's 5G launch

As a Telkomsel partner, Ericsson also showcased several 5G use cases at the 5G launch event, emphasizing the benefits of 5G for customers and companies.

One of the most lucrative benefits of 5G for users is the enhanced and immersive video quality. High speed with low latency 5G enables 360-degree 4K video streams on wireless connectivity, allowing users to enjoy immersive and real-time broadcasting through VR glasses.

At the Telkomsel event, Ericsson provided an interactive booth where visitors could experience 360 VR live streaming from Batam city, using a 360-degree wearable neckband camera from a startup that is part of the Ericsson Startup5G program. The technology on display is supported by end-to-end 5G connectivity between Batam and Jakarta.

In addition, 5G will transform enterprise operations, even opening up new opportunities in the future. Ericsson displays augmented reality visualization in digital form of a city directly. Immersive technologies such as mixed reality will enable urban planners to make better decisions to create sustainable urbanism in the future.

Hendri Mulya Syam, CEO of Telkomsel, said, “Telkomsel has always been at the forefront of telecommunications technology in Indonesia. Over the past few years, we have invested significantly in building practical knowledge of 5G, talent development, and a comprehensive suite of designs to bring 5G to Indonesia.
