Indonesia Develops Neutral Technology to Support 5G Ecosystem Development

The Indonesian government implements a neutral technology policy in the implementation of 5G or fifth generation cellular services. Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G. Plate hopes that this choice will support cellular telecommunications service providers to develop a technology ecosystem.

"The government has placed the choice of 5G technology as neutral technology. Therefore, it is very dependent on the choice of cellular operators to take advantage of their technology choices," he said at the Inauguration of 5G Telkomsel at the Surakarta Mayor's Office, Surakarta, Thursday (03/06/2021).

Minister Johnny stated that the Government and cellular operators are not tied to any particular type of technology, so they have the opportunity to choose neutral technology that fits business considerations and circumstances.

"For that, of course I hope that cellular operators choose applied technology, new technology in the 5th generation of telecommunications that is right to be efficient, both in infrastructure and in operations, of course we expect that," he explained.

According to the Minister of Communication and Information, the choice of 5G technology will require greater infrastructure support. Minister Johnny pointed out that the selection of microcells for Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and transmitters would require adequate deployment space.

"Therefore, cooperation with local governments is also important, so that there are regulations that allow the deployment of ICT infrastructure supporting 5G to be done quickly and easily. For example, microcells can be installed not only through towers, but also on top of buildings, also on electricity poles and even at traffic lights," he said.

In order to maintain the comfort and beauty of the city, Minister Johnny emphasized the need for regulations so that the development of ICT infrastructure does not overlap. “(Ensuring) it is already in good planning and urban planning. So that in addition to maintaining the comfort and beauty of the city, at the same time 5G and 4G technology can develop, "he said.

According to the Minister of Communication and Information, ICT infrastructure development must also be supported on the downstream side by utilizing digital technology that is so developed for the benefit of the community from various aspects of the digital economy, including e-commerce.

"Don't let us build 5G, but the downstream is controlled by technology or interests that are not in Indonesia's interests," he said.

Therefore, Minister Johnny ensures that the digital economy, digital culture, digital society and digital government, as well as various other digital ecosystems must be controlled domestically.

"Even to human to human, human to machine, and machine to machine communication, we must use it for our benefit as a nation," he said.

The Foundation for the Promotion of Pancasila Ideology

"We have to pay attention to the impact and we mitigate the risk, so that deploying or implementing 5G in Indonesia is beneficial for the benefit of our nation, people and society," he said.

Specifically, Minister Johnny stated that the President also reminded that 5G technology, which has a speed of 20 to 100 times, should not interfere with downstream.

"If the government makes regulations, takes part together with cellular operators in building ICT infrastructure on the upstream side, we must also ensure that on the downstream side, downstream so that the use of this new technology is useful for us. the development of a transnational ideology that collides with the ideology of our nation," he said.
