Indosat Ooredoo Launches 5G Services in Indonesia



PT. Indosat Tbk (“Indosat Ooredoo”), Indonesia’s leading digital telco, today announced the launch of its first commercial 5G services in the city of Solo. The new 5G services in Solo will offer Indosat Ooredoo's consumer and business customers access to enhanced mobile broadband internet, empowering the city’s economic recovery and digital transformation. The launch of commercial 5G services is part of a new partnership with Surakarta (“Solo”) Municipality to support its economic recovery.

The partnership also includes collaboration in micro & small-medium-sized enterprise (MSME) empowerment, digital talent education, and smart city development. Indosat Ooredoo’s President Director and CEO, Ahmad Al-Neama, announced the new partnership and launch of 5G services at an event in Solo attended by leading dignitaries, including Mayor of Surakarta Municipality, Gibran Rakabuming Raka; Qatar Ambassador for the Republic of Indonesia, H. E. Ms. Fawziya Edrees Salman Al-Sulaiti; and Huawei Indonesia CEO, Jacky Chen. Strict health and social distancing protocols were enforced throughout the event.

Among the advantages of the 5G in comparison to earlier generation network, it will allow a much faster speed, lower latency to enable accurate communication and larger capacity to connect to a lot more end devices (IoT), with a much more reliable connection. Huawei’s support for Indosat Ooredoo’s commercial 5G launch in Solo is also part of the company’s commitment towards technological inclusion in Indonesia, which includes helping the nation recover from the aftereffects of the pandemic by utilizing the most advanced digital technologies.

Throughout the pandemic, Huawei Indonesia has demonstrated its capacity in indispensable areas like healthcare, having worked together with renowned hospitals RSPAD and Pertamedika to enhance their services through faster and more accurate COVID-19 diagnoses as well as improved teleconsultations. Second, further Solo’s smart city & industry 4.0 vision through the application of machine learning and operation automation technology. Third, smart edutainments that combine the strengths of augmented and virtual reality technologies.

Following the initial 5G launch in Solo, Indosat Ooredoo plans to extend the commercial roll-out of 5G services to other major cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar, where there is high consumer demand for data services.
